Hockey Canada’s Shift Forward Program is a new hockey-specific education and training initiative designed to help create a safer, more respectful and inclusive hockey environment for everyone involved in the game.
The Shift Forward Program is replacing the previous Respect in Sport training with learning that is specifically designed around the realities of hockey and the different roles within the game. Training is tailored to coaches, officials, rostered team staff and parents/guardians, with player-focused learning being introduced as the program continues to develop. Topics include:
The program was developed by Hockey Canada following a national review of training needs. By managing the program directly, Hockey Canada can provide content that is more relevant to hockey and can continue to evolve as the needs of the hockey community change.
As part of Hockey Canada and the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF), APMHA will follow the Shift Forward training requirements as they are introduced. Expanded Shift Forward training begins for the 2026–2027 hockey season, with the program becoming mandatory for the hockey community by the 2028–2029 season.
Our goal is not simply to complete a training requirement. It is to help ensure that everyone involved in APMHA understands their role in creating a hockey environment where players feel safe, respected, supported and included. Shift Forward is intended to be an ongoing commitment to learning, accountability and positive behaviour—both on and off the ice.
Together, we can help move hockey forward.
